I am so glad I called Trish at PetCareLaw!


A 45lb 10month old bulldog puppy in my doggie daycare got a minor bite on his cheek from playing rough, it didn't even bleed, we cleaned it with Chlorexiderm and made sure it was not a puncture that needed medical attention. Told the owner when she picked him up. The next morning I had a 5 minute message that we didn't tell her enough, that she was very worried but she told the mother who is a medical doctor (for humans) and she asked the daughter is it bleeding? Does it look infected? To what she responded no. The mother said so what do you think the vet would tell you? That there is nothing to worry about! She did take the dog to the vet who examined him and prescribed antibiotics, told her there is nothing to worry about and charged a total of $89.

The owner of the dog is a lawyer and she sent me a 3 page letter demanding reimbursement of the medical expenses and an apology for having let that happen to her dog.

My first reaction was to call her and remind her that during the first 20 minute evaluation and second hour visit before accepting her dog, we discussed the risk of getting scratches or bites resulting from playing and that she signed a release saying she would pay for any vet bill etc. etc.

My second reaction was to pay her the $89 and get her out of my mind.
But by paying was I admitting liability? I did nothing wrong!

I didn't sleep well that night!

And I remember that I had attended an Intergroom seminar by Trish about her company PetCareLaw, I looked for her card the next morning and called.
